How to DIY Recondition Rusty Cast Iron Cookware

How to DIY Recondition Rusty Cast Iron Cookware

Many people like non-stick cookware because it’s very easy to use and clean. But more and more people have started to concern about the chemicals and toxins in the non-stick coating. Cast iron cookware has regained its popularity. It heats evenly and consistently. If welled seasoned, it will become naturally non-stick and requires no additional oil. Most important of all, it doesn’t contain any harmful chemical coatings!

Cast iron cookware can actually last forever with proper care. My mom has been using her old-fashioned cast iron pan for nearly 30 years and it is still in good conditions! Her secret was the pre-seasoning and the extra care after each use. Before the first use, she rubbed the cast iron pan with a thin coat of cooking oil, placed it upside down in the oven and baked at high temperature for half an hour. And after each use of the cast iron pan, she would wash it thoroughly under hot water without soap, placed it on the stove at low temperature. When the pan was heated, rub it with a thin coat of cooking oil. This might seem a lot of extra work at first, but you will get used to it and your cast iron pan will look like new!

If you didn’t take care of your cast iron cookware well and have some old and rusty cast iron cookware that you have not used for a long time, don’t worry! I found a nice tutorial on how to recondition them like new ones. All you need are a few inexpensive and readily available items such as heavy-duty oven cleaner and white distilled vinegar.
